FIFA 22 is vastly different from FIFA 21. The game features a slew of changes to its aesthetic, gameplay system and a few other core things.
For starters, skill moves aren't as effective as they were in last year's iteration of the game, certain gameplay sequences simply don't work as well as they used to and some formations are no longer as effective as they once were.
On that note, while some formations have lost their usefulness, let's take a look at the formations that are effective in FIFA 22.
So without further ado, let's dive into it.
The 4-2-2-2 Formation
AI-controlled players move intelligently across the pitch in FIFA 22, allowing you to consistently find spaces to exploit in the attacking third.
The 4-2-2-2 formation amplifies the usefulness of your players' intelligent runs, and this happens for two reasons - width and depth.
On the surface, the 4-2-2-2 formation might seem narrow, but don't let it's narrow look fool you, as it is a wide formation. The CAMs in the formation operate like wingers instead of CAMs, so they offer your team a solid stream of width on both flanks.
The 4-2-2-2 formation's width allows your players to move in such a way that subtly drags your opponent's players out of position - allowing your players constantly find open spaces to move into.
In a similar vein, the 4-2-2-2 formation's natural depth allows your team to overload your opponents in the attacking third - that's because, the formation is set up in such a way that your forwards - particularly your strikers and your "CAMs" typically operate high up the pitch.
However, it's worth noting that since the 4-2-2-2 formation naturally possesses a higher depth than more formations, it can be a bit harder to defend with the formation - so if you're someone who struggles defensively we recommend you check out the next formation on our list.
The 4-2-3-1 Narrow
The 4-2-3-1 narrow formation will probably never go out of style.
It was one of the best formation in FIFA 17 and years later, it's still pretty effective in FIFA 22.
The 4-2-3-1 formation is arguably the most balanced formation in FIFA 22.
All the players in your team are positioned in such a way that allows you to utilize different styles of play with ease.
It features one striker, three attacking midfielders, two defensive midfielders and four defenders.
The two defensive midfielders make it relatively easy to thwart incoming attacks, while the attacking midfielders allow you to ping the ball about high up the pitch without running out of passing options.
All-in-all the 4-2-3-1 narrow is a balanced formation that will allow you to utilize any play style of your choosing.
The 4-4-2 Flat
The 4-4-2 flat was probably the best formation in FIFA 21. It's not quite as good as it was last year, but it's still "META" in every sense of the term.
Like the 4-2-2-2, the 4-4-2 flat allows you to overwhelm your opponent's defence.
Everybody from your strikers to your wingers and even your central-midfielders can be used as an outlet for launching attacking sequences, which is why the 4-4-2 is ridiculously hard to face, especially when it's being used by a player who knows how to attack.
But while the 4-4-2 flat is great for attacking, it's also pretty good if you have a defensive style of play. However, in order to use the formation defensively, you will need to utilize a specific set of instructions for your wingers and your central midfielders.
For your wingers - you need to set them to "come back on defence".
While for your central midfielders - you need to set them to "stay back while attacking".
These two instructions will grant your team with added defensive cover - but it will also reduce your ability to overwhelm your opponents.
The 4-1-2-1-2 Narrow
If you prefer to utilize a fast-passing, high-octane style of play then the 4-1-2-1-2 narrow would probably fit you quite nicely.
The formation features two strikers and a central attacking midfielder - all of whom act as your team's main attacking outlets.
Due to the formation's narrow nature, your two strikers and your lone attacking midfielder will often find themselves up against your opponent's centre-backs in a 3 v 2 situation - offering you multiple opportunities to break past our opponent's defence and into their 18-yard-area.
It also features two CMs who can also contribute to your attacking moves - as well as a CM whose main role is to provide your team with additional defensive cover.
The 4-3-3 Attack

4-3-3 isn't as common as it used to be in FIFA, but it's still pretty effective - especially in FIFA 22 thanks to the new system for making intelligent runs.
The 4-3-3 (attack) formation, like its name suggests is great for overwhelming your opponents with powerful attacking sequences.
This formation features one striker, two wingers and three central midfielders - although, it's worth noting that your CMs have a tendency to operate high up the pitch in this formation often creating the illusion of having six forwards on the pitch when you're attacking.
If you're someone who's extremely good at attacking, then the 4-3-3 (attack) formation would serve you well.
