The 5 go-to items recommended for support players
In order to become a truly proficient support player, you need to understand and learn several things: positioning, warding, harassing, stacking, pulling etc. But one of the biggest challenges players in the lower brackets struggle with understanding is which items to buy.
Luckily, there are a few select items that are good options in almost any game on almost any support hero. Let’s take a look at them.
If there’s one item the enemy carry is going to be most frustrated by, it is Glimmer Cape. The item was straight up broken before, when the buildup required a Gloves of Haste instead of a recipe. So much so, that it was even a decent item to buy on a core/carry hero. A bit of magic resistance, a bit of attack speed, and a few seconds of invisibility to initiate or disengage from a fight. The item was just way too good.
And even after the nerfs, this item is still highly recommended on support heroes, primarily position 5 hard supports. Even though it can be countered by a single Dust of Appearance or Sentry Ward, it is still worth the pickup. Sometimes, the enemy may not have true sight, or they may have exhausted their sources of true sight. And sometimes, it can buy you just enough time to force the enemy into just the right position and make the teamfight or skirmish move in your favour.
An interesting point you should know is that the 45% bonus magic resistance persists even after you are revealed using true sight. So it really does make a massive difference on the effective HP of the hero you use it on.
Ever since solar crest’s buildup was reworked in patch 7.29, it has become a must-have item in every match, regardless of the heroes. The constituent components are all very cheap (except for the recipe) and allow you to slowly build up the item, even if you’re not earning a lot of gold or dying too often. Even a Medallion of Courage early on is very powerful at making you or an ally stronger, or amplify the damage of your carry by lowering the enemy’s armour.
But we still haven’t come to main reason why you should buy this item. Solar Crest speeds up the rate at which you kill Roshan by a substantial amount. It alleviates you from the worry of whether your draft has a good ‘Roshing hero’ or not, since you can simply buy this item instead. An added tip for you is that you should simply stand outside the Roshan pit, hidden in the fog of war and constantly use Solar Crest on Roshan, while your teammates try to kill him.
This has been a go-to support item since the beginning of the game, and there’s no mystery why. Force Staff is a unique saving item that allows you to escape roots and leashes, while also repositioning yourself to a safer place. Plus, it can push you over cliffs, making juking that much easier.
The item was arguably over-powered when it was reworked to require a Ring of Health instead of a Ring of Regen in its buildup. But, the current buildup with Fluffy Hat is still better than the Ring of Regen and fairly convenient. Keep in mind that you can use Force Staff not just on you but also your allies to save them from a tricky situation. And remember, it doesn’t work against certain spells like Disruptor’s Kinetic Field or Mars’ Arena of Blood.
Urn of Shadows
Another item with a cheap and easy buildup is Urn of Shadows. It feels like it gives you everything, a bit of mana regeneration, a bit of armour and a few stat points. But the best part is its active ability. A 240 HP heal or 200 damage debuff can be pretty impactful in the early game. It allows you to snowball off of kills, keep your allies healthy and get more kills to get even more charges.
Its upgrade Spirit Vessel is all the more better, especially in the current meta. Its a popular strategy to pick heroes or buy items that give you heals, and Spirit Vessel is perfect to counter that. However, it is a much more expensive buildup that Urn of Shadows, which is why its better to buy this item on the position 4 soft support rather than the position 5 hard support. But, you don’t necessarily need to upgrade it every single game. Sometimes, its okay to prioritize another item.
Last, but certainly not the least, is Magic Wand! Everyone likes to buy big items and think about what they can do in the mid-to-late game. However, in order to get there, you need the crucial early game items so you can gain an advantage and afford the bigger items.
While it wasn’t necessary to upgrade your Magic Stick to a Magic Wand before, there is now a good reason to do so. The upgrade Holy Locket has been buffed several items in the last few patches and suddenly become a popular pickup. The buildup is also relatively simple and easy. The item is recommended if you’re playing a hero with heals, as it gets amplified by 35%. Once again, it is not absolutely necessary to go for Holy Locket, but Magic Wand is a must-buy!
And that’s it for our list of the go-to items for support players! Remember to always make an effort to think about which heroes you’re playing against and buy the suitable items for that particular game. But, if you’re ever confused, you can always rely on this list. And remember, Hand of Midas is NOT a good purchase on supports! Especially in this patch. Yes, even on Ogre Magi!
