On the surface, League of Legends and DOTA 2 are quite similar, but even with their many similarities they still boast a ton of differences a lot of which can be found in their various game mechanics.
With that said, here’s a comprehensive look at some of the key differences between two of the biggest MOBA games on the planet;
Unlike League of Legends, DOTA 2 has a unique mechanic that allows you to prevent your opponents from gaining XP and gold from creeps - this mechanic is known as denying since you’re more or less ‘denying’ the enemy from gaining stuff when you make use of it.
Denying allows you to kill friendly creeps when they’re at a certain amount of health in order to prevent your opponents from ‘last-hitting’ as getting a last-hit on DOTA 2 allows you to gain gold.
League of Legends is not a simple game by any means, but it is easier to get a hang of than DOTA 2.
DOTA 2 has a ton of depth - from its game mechanics right down to its hero diversity, if you’re not a seasoned player you’ll find yourself being overwhelmed by the sheer amount of gameplay options available on DOTA 2.
DOTA 2’s depth makes it notoriously difficult to pick up for new players whereas Riot games prioritize a fun, beginner-friendly environment in a bid to cater to the game’s newer players.
League of Legends requires a ton of time and effort to get really good at - but because of its sheer depth, DOTA 2 requires a whole different level of mastery to play it at a high level.
League of Legends has an annoying microtransaction system, to say the least - it's not as bad as other games, but its fairness is questionable.
Tons of players aren’t fans of LoLs microtransaction system due to the fact that it lets you purchase stuff you’d normally have to grind hard for - this includes champions.
LoLs microtransaction system isn’t necessarily paid to win, but spending money on the game essentially makes it easier for you to progress instead of spending tons of time grinding to unlock a champion.
DOTA 2 on the other hand doesn’t have a p2w element, instead, its microtransactions are centered on cosmetic items, creating a more balanced and competitive experience for its players.
Skillshots essentially involve hitting other players with ability while manually aiming it from a distance.
Most League of Legend champions is able to perform skill-shots as they typically have projectile-based abilities that they can manually direct towards an enemy.
DOTA 2 differs from LoL in that regard. While skill shots also exist on DOTA 2, they are not nearly as common as they are on LoL.
DOTA 2 heroes typically have more lock-on abilities than skill-shots.
At the beginning of every match on League of Legends, you’re able to select two ‘summoner spells’ which are essentially perks that give your champion an added advantage in a match.
There are no summoner spells or anything really similar on DOTA 2, in fact, based on the effects of the summoner spells that are available on LoL, most DOTA 2 players would argue that they’d be a ‘broken’ mechanic if they were available on DOTA 2.
