Carry Players: How To Take Advantage Of The Last Pick In DOTA
Having the last pick is one of the most underrated facets of DOTA 2 – especially for carry players. Here are some crucial tips for taking advantage of the last pick as a carry player;
Do not get countered pick
Carry is all about farming better than your opponent. There is a concept far more important than networth, though, That concept is called counter pick!
You want to pick a hero who will do his job without getting annoyed by the opponents.
For example, if your opponents have heroes like Storm, Riki, Windranger, something like Lifestealer would not work.
Even with a lot of networth, he will struggle to find a target to unleash his right-click damage. In simple words, the enemies can easily kite him.
Having last pick means to pick for the game!
Pick for the game, not the lane!
Take advantage of the last pick! It is preferable to pick something that will have a solid mid game and will have no difficulties later on, even if it means having a weak laning stage.
For example! Phantom Lancer is great versus heroes that do not have catch. Heroes like Ancient Apparition, Beastmaster, Jakiro, Crystal Maiden, Queen of Pain generally are weak versus Phantom Lancer.
On the other hand, Phantom Lancer does not lane great versus Beastmaster. As a result, he will receive a lot of pressure, maybe even lose his tower early on.
What is the plan, then? You get your level 6, which will allow you to farm fast, get your first couple of items, and once the middle game kicks in, you start fighting with your team! The longer the game goes, the easier it will get!
Counter Pick The Enemy Carry
This is by far the most important thing I could advise you. The games always feel easier if you have a better matchup carry. So these two heroes usually decide most fights.
You and the enemy carry! If you see what the enemy carry hero is, you should pick something that counters them.
Let us give some examples with heroes that are in meta right now!
Sven is a pretty typical hero. What is his weakness, though? He is easy to kite! So any ranged hero that is hard to kill is also high armor, or quite tanky is good!
Terrorblade and Medusa, natural Skadi carries, are perfect versus him! Medusa is hard to kill because she has the mana shield. Terrorblade has a lot of armor, making it impossible for enemies to kill him with physical damage!
Let us give you more examples so you can get to counter your opponents!
Sven is great versus Luna, Gyrocopter, and Phantom Lancer. He can farm fast, and these heroes are not that tanky. Sven can get them down if he is not behind in gold!
Heroes such as Lifestealer and Chaos Knight are excellent versus heroes and can get to manfight anyone, but you risk falling behind in networth!
These are the type of heroes that you win lane, and you want to snowball. You want to end the game before the enemies have enough items to sustain your physical damage!
Moneky King and Slark are also pretty similar to the aforementioned examples. These are also great to manfight, but they can farm decently and win the lane simultaneously!
So what are some great heroes who can hold their own against them?
Heroes that can dodge them and farm quite fast. Gyrocopter and Luna might not be able to manfight them, but if they have way more networth, it’s pretty easy!
Lastly, Antimage! What does AM struggle the most against? High physical damage! So, what to pick versus Anti mage then?
Phantom Assasin and Ursa are great picks! All you need is a small lockdown to kill them!
